Discover Kings Park Retford

Kings Park in Retford, often referred to as the “jewel in the heart of the town,” is a historic and beautifully maintained public space that has been serving the community since its opening on June 29, 1938. The park was established to commemorate the reign of King George V and the coronation of King George VI. The land for the original park, stretching from Chancery Lane to the River Idle, was generously donated by Mrs. M.J. Huntsman of West Retford Hall in 1937 .

Covering over 10 hectares, Kings Park offers a wide range of facilities and attractions. The park is divided by the scenic River Idle and features formal gardens, a wildlife garden, open grasslands, and a variety of recreational amenities. These include a children’s play area, a water play area open during the summer months, tennis courts, a bowling green, and a skate park. The park also boasts beautifully landscaped rose gardens and a bridge that provides picturesque views over the river .

Kings Park is well-regarded for its community involvement and environmental stewardship, consistently earning the prestigious Green Flag Award, which recognizes well-managed parks and green spaces. The park is a focal point for local events and celebrations, including its 80th anniversary in 2018, which featured vintage-themed activities and performances to celebrate its rich history and significance to the town of Retford .

In addition to its recreational and aesthetic offerings, Kings Park plays an important role in the cultural life of Retford, providing a serene environment for relaxation and community gatherings throughout the year. Its continued development and maintenance are a testament to the dedication of local volunteers and the support of the Bassetlaw District Council.
